First symptoms showed up in june 2004. The disease progressively got worse, and right before the treatment Kelly was confined to a wheelchair and had limited use of his hands. Diagnosis: bulbar ALS – January, 2005.
Before the treatment

He could not get up out of his wheelchair, unless he was assisted to be sure he would not lose his balance. Kelly could only raise his hands to his chest when laying on a bed. He had trouble in swallowing and could not move his facial muscles well or stick out his tongue. He was taking 10 mg of Baclofen three times a day to prevent muscle spasticity.
Kelly arrived at Nan Shan on february 12th, 2006, for a therapy consisting in four stem cells injections through IV and intrathecal, supported by HGH and nerve growth factor.

After the treatment
He could get out of his wheelchair by himself and walk on his own. His hand's mobility increased: he could turn his hands out more and move them out to the sides. Kelly had an easier time swallowing and could move his facial muscles when having a shave. He could stick out his tongue. He only needed to take Baclofen 10mg once, every one or two days.
Note
Kelly was on a high protein diet, taking a cocktail of medicines including the experimental drug IGF which he feels may have helped the stem cells in acting more quickly. When Kelly came for the treatment he did not bring his IGF with him, and substituted HGH for it. HGH raises the level of IGF in the body. Soon after hearing that Kelly was taking HGH, the other ALS patients asked for it, too.
