Translation of text from video interview
Chu’s husband:
“Before the treatment, her situation was as follows. When she went out, she was often disoriented and felt dizzy. What she did made no sense. She was constantly in this situation. Secondly, she had difficulty in sleeping at night. She sat up suddenly at night and said something abnormal. Chu spoke like she was in a dream. For example, one day she mentioned her father. They called their father ‘A Ba’. She said: ‘A Ba is coming’. In fact, her father died many years ago, in 1972. Suddenly she said this, and I felt scared. She has improved even though some problems remain. Since we returned home before spring festival, she has energy and her look is good. People in our neighbourhood said she has changed a lot. My burden is now lightened because she can sleep better than before. Of course, she still has difficulties in sleeping once in a while. For instance, at midnight she sometimes gets up and can’t fall asleep. However, this has decreased a lot. Another thing: now after getting up she washes, has breakfast and does other things… just like a normal person. In the morning she goes out to buy groceries, cleans the vegetables and washes the dishes. She couldn’t do these things at all before.”
Interviewer:
“Have her every day living abilities gotten better?”
Chu’s husband:
“Yes, she did not do daily activities at all before, which meant that I had to do them. On the 28th of last month, she could not fall asleep, saying she said could not breathe. She was afraid of dying in her sleep. I was frightened by what she said. Finally, she slept well that night. I feel she has changed a lot. Now she speaks more normally than before. Another point is about her going out. She went out frequently before but she was in a bad mood; Chu was like a lunatic and behaved abnormally. I was worried about her going out on her own. We came back to the hospital several times and recently she did it by herself twice. She came to the hospital for the check up on her own. I didn’t dare to let her do it on her own before. I simply didn’t dare to.”
Chu:
“I came here twice…”
Chu’s husband:
“Another point: she walks around near our home much more. Chu is not interested in staying at home, she says our home is stuffy. Our apartment is on the first floor but has north and south windows, so it should be well ventilated. Anyway: she says she feels it is stuffy, which means that she is still sick. Right? But mentally, I feel she has improved and is more normal now than before even though she is still different from normal people. Thus, the pressure on my mind decreased. I feel better than before, especially because I had no chance to sleep at night before her treatment. It turns out to be better in this aspect. Now I have confidence in her. Since she has improved, I think that the treatment had a good effect on her.”
Interviewer:
“Does she now act as a member of family and society? Is her quality of life better than before?”
Chu’s husband:
“Yes.”
Interviewer:
“What about her spirit? Is it better?”
Chu’s husband:
“Yes. People in the neighbourhood wonder why she still has to go to hospital, because she looks healthy now. Only if they talk a lot to her, they will find that she is still not okay. We know she is sick, but the strangers can not tell now. Her appearance is now healthy.”
